Behind everything crouched the brooding, festering horror of the ancient town, and of the mouldy, unhallowed garret gable where he wrote and studied and wrestled with figures and formulae when he was not tossing on the meager iron bed. His ears were growing sensitive to a preternatural and intolerable degree, and he had long ago stopped the cheap mantel clock whose ticking had come to seem like a thunder of artillery. At night the subtle stirring of the black city outside, the sinister scurrying of rats in the wormy partitions, and the creaking of hidden timbers in the centuried house, were enough to give him a sense of strident pandemonium. The darkness always teemed with unexplained sound – and yet he sometimes shook with fear lest the noises he heard should subside and allow him to hear certain other fainter noises which he suspected were lurking behind them.

He was in the changeless, legend-haunted city of Arkham, with its clustering gambrel roofs that sway and sag over attics where witches hid from the King’s men in the dark, olden years of the Province.

A shadowy, unapproachable forest of maple, birch, dogwood, cypress and pine softened by a garland of New England wildflowers: bergamot, columbine, rue anemone, blue violet, creeping phlox, bloodroot, toadflax, and pixie moss.

On my skin the scent usually smells like I’ve been touring botanical gardens and hiking all day out in the woods. The bergamot for me never really is pronounced but the scents just swirl together into foreboding wilderness that I dig.

Purchased an imp of this blind and was intrigued by the description. My nose is not refined enough to give a detailed description but it is a fragrance that makes me want to wander deeper into it and stay there. Is a bit flowery, but not in a super feminine way, and slightly herbal and woodsy. A good balance.

In the imp I get a strong rainy scent, very fresh and clean, almost like Irish Spring soap but far less artificial. The woods jump out hard on my skin and seem to overpower any florals, but as it dries down it’s getting a bit softer and more powdery. It’s lovely, but it didn’t last long on my skin, barely long enough to notice a shift in fragrance. In an oil diffuser it seems a bit deeper, the powdery quality is there right from the start without overpowering the rain scent, and there’s definitely something dark and mysterious. A bit like being in a spooky forest for sure, but during the day rather than at night. The atmosphere is foggy and subtle, not overly sinister. I probably won’t use this as a perfume anymore since it fades so quickly (and that’s just my body chemistry being annoying), but wow is it great as a room scent. It’s like having the windows open on a drizzly day while someone burns sacred herbs and wildflowers in the distance. A scent that’s hard to describe without using poetic language.

A clean, sweet, floral scent. The wood notes are very slight.

I received Azathoth as a bonus in my Imp’s Ears pack and instantly fell in love! It reminds me of my altar, my favorite dark corners, my sexiest clothes and my favorite horror stories. It is rich, smoky and absolutely intoxicating! I love it so much!

This was my first (and first favorite) scent from BPAL. I bought the 5ml blind, got it in the mail, and loved it instantly. I still love it. It has aged steadily over the last 5 years. I am so afraid that it will discontinue. It is the most beautiful slick, green floral. It’s feminine and unexpected and so sly. Forever and always my favorite BPAL.

I’m not sure what part of the scent I smell when I smell this, but to me it smells wet, and I love it.

I buy this scent for my husband and it smells great on him and he receives lots of compliments on it.

A Witch’s chest of herbs, potions, oils and brews. Piney and hinting of the barks of native deciduous forests. The astringency of the woods gives way to the forest floor and what grows at the bases of the trees…the bitterness bloodroot, anemone, and toadflax and the fresh green-ness of violet leaf. Out of the bottle, this perfume has a slight “off” scent recalling the dire happenings in tales of the town of Arkham. However, the bitterness fades eventually into a faint powdery edge.

I love the Picnic in Arkham collection so I was sure I would like the imp of Arkham I got. The scent is well balanced but all I kept smelling was the bergamot and bloodroot which though fine together didn’t appeal to me.
