Lavender Water

Pluck out his eyes! Lilith’s Shakespeare group reconvened this year for a (masked and distanced) performance of King Lear. I cannot put into words how important it was for Lilith to be able to return to the stage. Not only is it one of their great loves, but it was the first step towards normalcy that we had been able to take in over a year.

Lilith was cast as Goneril, and Lilith played the part with relish; Goneril and Regan truly were the fiercest bitches in the kingdom.

A story from July of this year –

One night, while we were getting ready for bed, Lilith turns to me and says very earnestly, “I love you.”

    “I love you, too.”

“Mom, I do love you more than words can wield the matter, dearer than eyesight, space, and liberty, beyond what can be valued, rich or rare, no less than life, with grace, health, beauty, honor, as much as child e’er loved or father found. A love that makes breath poor and speech unable.”

Sus. Very sus. Lilith is fortunate that they only have to split the kingdom with a couple of dogs, but I’d watch out if I were Matilda.

Saccharine sweetness cloaking something sinuous and sinister: sugared opium poppy and lavender water.
