Ave Maria Gratia Plena Perfume Oil

$4.60$19.75

Was this His coming! I had hoped to see
A scene of wondrous glory, as was told
Of some great God who in a rain of gold
Broke open bars and fell on Danae:
Or a dread vision as when Semele
Sickening for love and unappeased desire
Prayed to see God’s clear body, and the fire
Caught her brown limbs and slew her utterly:
With such glad dreams I sought this holy place,
And now with wondering eyes and heart I stand
Before this supreme mystery of Love:
Some kneeling girl with passionless pale face,
An angel with a lily in his hand,
And over both the white wings of a Dove.

A pale, delicate, truly angelic blend. A scent created to emulate Adonis’ halo of beauty: fragile, distant, and radiant. Rosewood with Sicilian lemon peel, red Mysore sandalwood, pale musks, sweet mountain sage and a dusting of lily, night-blooming jasmine and orris.

My first impression on the first sniff is that it’s quite strong and perfumy, similar to accidentally smashing one of your mother’s more expensive perfumes as a small child. The next thing that goes through my mind is that it’s very, very, oh, so extremely familiar…. and then it comes to me — this smells almost exactly like Caron’s Fleurs de Rocaille (1930), but headier, more stubborn, more commanding. Fleurs de Rocaille has a very special place in my heart, so I’m immediately head over heels in love with Ave Maria. There is definitely a bit of a dried flower smell, but I can’t shake the glamour of the 1930s off. It has a good throw but isn’t overpowering; and I can still catch traces of it at the end of the day – softer, like a memory of the bouquet.

Since perfume is so subjective, my 5 stars is based on the scent staying with me through the day and not irritating my sensitive skin or giving me a headache. Ave Maria Gratia Plena is a very baby powder forward scent for me. The powdery quality fades slightly as the skin warms and the muskier florals begin to peek through, but it remains the prominent note of this scent for me.

this is much too white-floral heavy for me to wear as a perfume, but it does make a lovely sachet scent.

This has that Easter flowers scent I love (in theory), but these flowers have been sitting in the window for a few days. They feel dry. I do detect the rosewood underneath, and I got a fair bit of the lemon while wet and during dry down, but I’m not detecting any sage. When wet, this is a lot soapier than the final drydown, which is great. It’s not bad, but it’s no Peitho for me.

Actually, upon reapplying, I can smell the sage when wet, but it totally fades on me by the time it’s dry.

I definitely get a church vibe from this, and I can see it as a nice atmosphere blend for the diffuser during the spring. Not so great as a perfume on my skin.

Out of all the ones I’ve tried so far, I think this might be my favorite. What a heavenly smell!

In the imp: Jasmine, Lily, Rosewood, and a little hint of zest.

Wet: The zest goes away on me, which suits me just fine. The pure, clean, sweet smell of flowers matures nicely on the skin.

Dry: The previous smells, plus a little of the flowery orris come through. Very lovely. The hints of sweet sage and sandalwood are very, very subtle, and they give the flowers a more earthy tone, but they do not at all dominate. The sweetness of the flowers sticks on me hours later, and it’s simply divine.

    Verdict: I’m in love.

My first five. This is beautiful, uplifting; lily and jasmine-forward in the imp, rosewood blooming through on my skin, various soft citrus, herbs, and florals falling gently into balance as it dries. it fades to a faint orris musk, but hints of each flower peep out at intervals. It’s reminiscent of a fragrance my grandmother used to keep on her dressing table, but far more complex and lovely. I’m not normally a fan of florals–in fact, I typically avoid them quite actively; but in this case, I’m contemplating buying the bottle.

I didn’t love this fragrance at first but when it dries it is clearly more floral and woodsy. Perfect balance of feminine and earthy for me.

I was afraid it would smell like incense but it is def. not that heavy.
