Beauty, joy, pleasure and delight: devastated. This is the scent of the hopelessness, torment and despair of love. Lavender and wisteria, heart-wrenching pale rose, desolate white sandalwood and thin, tear-streaked white musk.

A cat is penned up in a steel chamber, along with the following diabolical device (which must be secured against direct interference by the cat): in a Geiger counter there is a tiny bit of radioactive substance, so small that perhaps in the course of one hour one of the atoms decays, but also, with equal probability, perhaps none; if it happens, the counter tube discharges and through a relay releases a hammer which shatters a small flask of hydrocyanic acid. If one has left this entire system to itself for an hour, one would say that the cat still lives if meanwhile no atom has decayed. The first atomic decay would have poisoned it. The Psi function for the entire system would express this by having in it the living and the dead cat (pardon the expression) mixed or smeared out in equal parts. I don’t smell lavender on this at all. Lavender is this green, herbal, not at all floral scent, and this scent contains none of that. It’s wisteria all the way, without the headache-inducing qualities. Like wisteria if you smell it very early in the morning before everything has gotten hot: just sweet and light, sort of liquid. It’s a very high-class sort of scent, occasionally changing to milled soap on me before wisping back to sandalwood, white musk, and then that sweet wisteria again. That’s me though: I eat a lot of garlic and onions.

Ode on Melancholy (Bewitching Brews series) –
What??? I mean….what??? I don’t get it. Had to apply twice, and even sleep with this on my wrists. Wardrobe dust, old soap, eucalyptus?? No-no, just something else, grief smell…like a medication, tincture. This smell does make me sad. It’s not a light sadness that would inspire me. If it was just a vintage rose soap, less grounded, so my thoughts could fly high – then yes. But no. There is some earthy cold note haunting this perfume. It is unsettling.
“She dwells with Beauty — Beauty that must die” says John Keats; “Beauty, joy, pleasure and delight: devastated” – says the perfume description. This is precise. Lavender? Not the type you would use for your aromatherapy. A perverted, dusty lavender. Sandalwood? Maybe the reason I still keep my hope. White musk? Oh that’s what is lurking and creeping me out. And this emotional bitterness is coming from the white rose. I’m so sensitive.. …I’m almost sobbing. After 30 min the fragrance settled down, like a crying baby that found comfort, became weak and quiet after the tears. Now it smells like dry tears on a bar of soap. I think a more mature/older person can pull this perfume better than I do. It is too white and grey-hairy to my taste.

When I first put this on, I thought I would dislike it. The lavender sort of punched me in the face. Within 15 or so minutes, however, the lavender faded into the background, almost unnoticeable. This allowed the rest of the scents to come out to play in an evenly mixed group. And it smells heavenly. Light and clear, girly without being overpoweringly so, soft and comforting. It reminds me a bit of Endymion, which is a lily of the valley scent. The sandalwood and white musk give it a touch of cream. Just amazing on my skin. Definitely a keeper.

in the bottle: The sandalwood is very strong here. Then the airy musk and lavender come out. I haven’t recognized any of the wisteria and the rose scent is faded.
wet on skin: there is a lovely mellow rose mixed with the lavender scent. I can identify the musk but it is still very subtle and comforting. It is a very calming scent, very comforting. An odd experience because one wrist has more of the sandalwood scent than the other. This scent does trigger a bit of an introspective and reflective mood.
30+ mins: Everything is blended together. Nothing comes out stronger than the other scents. There is almost a Nag Champa scent lingering. I can get a slightly salty scent off my skin with a fresh quality that might be from the lavender. I get the “tear streaked” description during this stage. To me, the musk is very pleasant. I can’t identify the rose independently out of the blend.
3+ hours: The wisteria makes a soft and airy scent on my skin. Saddly the sandalwood seems gone. There is a faint rose lingering behind. The lavender has blended into the musk and it is almost buried in my skin. The name, Ode on Melancholy is well suited. In the bottle the heavier scents dominate. On the skin the florals are brought out but are weighed down by the sandalwood and musk. For a moment the florals give a sharp airy scent. Everything sweet and light then fades away-leaving the airy musk. This is the experience of Melancholy. The heavy pain and sorrow, given hope and light graces, only to be weighed down and silenced as hope fades away. Until you reapply and the scent cycle begins again.

Very strong, clean lavender/floral scent. It kinda punches you right out of the bottle and since I’m not a huge fan of lavender it can be overpowering. However, it mellows to something really nice and a bit sweeter. Good staying power too. Wistful and melancholy.

This is too much lavender for my skin, but if you like lavender, you’ll love this.
