Considered a great honor, this is one of the most distinguished aspects of New Orleans culture. Its roots lie in the customs of the Dahomeans and Yoruba people, and is a celebration of both the person’s life and the beauty and solemnity of their death. The procession is lead by the Grand Marshal, resplendent in his black tuxedo, white gloves and black hat in hand; almost a vision of the great Baron Samedi himself. The music begins with solemn, tolling dirges, moves into hymns of sorrow, loss and redemption. When the burial site is reached, a two-note preparatory riff is sounded, and the drummers start the second-line beat, heralding the switch in music to joyous, upbeat songs, dancing, and the unfurling of richly decorated umbrellas by the ‘second line’ friends, family, loved ones and stray celebrants. Strutting, bouncing, and festive dance accompanies the upbeat ragtime music that sends the departed soul onto its next journey.
Didn’t he ramble
… he rambled
Rambled all around
… in and out of town
Didn’t he ramble
… didn’t he ramble
He rambled till the butcher cut him down.
His feet was in the market place
his head was in the street
Lady pass him by, said
look at the market meat
He grabbed her pocket book
and said I wish you well
She pulled out a forty-five
said I’m head of personnel.
Didn’t he ramble
… he rambled
Rambled all around
… in and out of town
Didn’t he ramble
… didn’t he ramble
He rambled till the butcher cut him down.
He slipped into the cat house
made love to the stable
Madam caught him cold
said I’ll pay you when I be able
Six months had passed
and she stood all she could stand
She said buddy when I’m through with you
Ole groundhog gonna be shakin yo’ hand.
Didn’t he ramble
… he rambled
Rambled all around
… in and out of town
Didn’t he ramble
… didn’t he ramble
He rambled till the butcher cut him down.
I said he rambled
lord
… ’till the butcher shot him down.
Bittersweet bay rum, bourbon, and a host of funeral flowers with a touch of graveyard dirt, magnolia and Spanish Moss.

Tuberose stands out most, but in my case I’ve noticed when that note is included it tends to no matter what. Lilac is secondary, followed by a touch of violet. Very much a floral and fantastic for anyone looking for that!

I ordered an imp of this scent and I will certainly be buying the full bottle! I have literally never had a perfume react so beautifully with my own chemistry to create the delightful scent that Nocturne does. The violet is strong and almost spicy on me when wet, and as it dries the lilac and rose give it a sensual sweetness that makes me feel like an absolute Queen. It has excellent staying power—I put some behind my ears this morning and I can still smell it in my hair now, a full 12 hours later.

Nocturne (Ars Moriendi series)
When the crochet hook of the perfume knits the laces of my memories…. The first impression of the scent was the Golden Star Balm, the one that my mum used to put under my nose when I was having the flu. She kept it (and still keeps!) in her bedside drawer. But that’s just at first glance. That drawer had so many treasures dear to my heart… If I could describe the colour of the perfume without knowing what’s in it, I would say pure violet, solid and deep. The 3 flowers merged into one velvety scent are Violet, Lilac and Tuberose – all powdery purples! I’m making some progress!
As I kept inhaling, my nose gave up on me and went numb sensing only something like a powder….yes a compact powder I found in an old dresser together with forever shut old perfumes and colourful bijouterie. A 3 year old me smeared the powder all over my face so I could be as beautiful as my mum, so I thought. This scent brings a lot of childhood memories with trembling moments of pure excitement when my mum would open a hand-carved wooden casket with a rose on top and a deep purple trim inside. It was the most beautiful thing in the world! A jewellery box full of little perfume imps, old silver coins, amber necklaces, metal brooches, pins, tiny pictures and aged postcards. The most majestic and my absolutely favourite was an enigmatic set of moonstone earrings and a pendant. This is the smell of a miracle anticipation and an adventure thrill of me being a kid. This is the purple, slightly medicinal, moon stone smell that inhabits the word “Nocturne”. The description says “contemplative scent – dreamy and subdued”. Indeed, I fell years and years back in my contemplation and found something so dear to me, that I almost forgot. It’s like catching a breath of violet on a spring day brought from somewhere by the playful breeze. You turn your head, sniff the air, step back and forward again, turn around but the scent is gone and you don’t seem to spot a visible patch of flowers anywhere close. Violets….exactly the way they smelled once, smell briefly, smell always and forever.

This scent is beautiful! Very sweet, but not overpowering or immature. Most scents seem to smell super powdery on me but this one doesn’t. It is stronger on me than some BPAL scents– when I move I keep getting a whiff of it and wondering, “what smells so good?” before I remember that it is me. I got an imp, will most likely repurchase!

If you like sweet florals and violet, you’ll like this. This is a pure floral scent. Violet is predominate, the lilac and rose come out more through the day. It has a somewhat powdery scent to it, at least on me. I give it a 4 because it’s a pretty light scent and I would personally prefer a bit more scent throw.

in the bottle: absolutely beautiful blend. Lilac tends to overpower a lot of the times that it is used, but not here. This is a garden at night. all of the flowers blend perfectly together.
wet on skin: violet and lilac in the forefront. There is a little heavy rose grounding everything and
keeping it from being too airy. It blends together in a deep inhale and then fades.
30+ mins: the scent is very soft and gentle. The sweetness of the violet mixes well with the lilac. This is like an innocent version of Les Fleurs du Mal. There’s a very calm night impression coming off this scent.
3+ hours: There is still a sweetness to this floral. The violets and lilacs give the sweet scent a very fruity element. This now reminds me of Oya. If Oya is the Goddess of War and Ozone, Nocturne would be the night sky trailing in her wake. This is a very clear and airy scent. I could wear this everyday. It isn’t a dark and heavy scent. This is very feminine.
If you like this scent but want a more mature and dominate aura, try Oya.

In 2005, this was a cold, somber, clean violet scent. My latest samples (2016) are much warmer, sweeter and more complex. It smells of violet pastilles candy, slightly powdery, with a drydown of violet pastilles, lilac sugar crystals, and a sharp, clean, gauzy white floral feel from the tuberose. Very strong and long lasting, with a pleasant, candied floral scent.

A wonderful floral. Smells of gardenia on me. A bit strong, but a very pleasant scent.
Gloame –
Soft, sweet floral. The violet is prominent here. Smells like flowers blooming at night and quiet love.
Feminine, floral, twilight.

Very good. Delicate, yes, but exactly the violet-y fragrance I’ve been searching for.

I love this one – quite floral, but with the quality of gloaming at the edge of a meadow, rather than youth and sunshine. Tuberose was the predominant scent for me, drying down into subtler flowers. Glad I tried it!
