It’s a rite of passage that transcends language, nationality, and gender: the humble hickey, the love bite, the rose tattoo.

It can happen to anyone, whether accidentally or on purpose. Previous generations viewed these as literal marks of shame, but 21st century lovers have leaned in, casually flaunting the kind of suction-induced blemishes their elders would have painstakingly covered with scarves, turtlenecks, and blotches of makeup. We salute and envy the lack of self-consciousness with which you wear these bruisy badges of honor, these testaments to personal deliciousness, these little memorial plaques reading: Someone Feasted Here.

While the origin and etymology of the term “hickey” have been lost to history, other languages’ terms tend to be far more illustrative, musical to the ear, or even downright poetic. We’ve been compiling a list of these for our Lupercalia launch, and now we’ll find out who is brave enough to flaunt them.
