What is a Shop account and why is it asking for it? 

Shop is an all in one app that will save your information for a quicker checkout and tracking. Your customer account will contain your order history, gift card balance, and saved addresses.

You are still able to checkout as a guest without having to sign up for Shop. 

++GIFT CARDS & STORE CREDITS

I had a credit/gift card to the old BPAL site, how do I use it here?

We are currently in the process of reissuing all of the store credits from the old site as digital gift cards. You will receive a code to the email address used in your old customer account that can be entered at checkout here.

How do I redeem my gift card?

To redeem your gift card, enter the code that you were issued in the gift card field at the checkout screen. On a desktop, this will be in the right column above the total amount of your order. On mobile, expand “Order Summary” and enter your code in the gift card field. 

If you received your gift card before May of 2026 and have not yet received a new code, please contact customer service with your gift card code and the email address or name that it was issued to and we will reissue it for you.

Gift cards do not expire.

How do I redeem my store credit?

Store credits will be added to your customer account where the balance may be viewed under your customer profile.

Your store credit can be redeemed by checking the "Apply Store Credit" box in the Payment section of Checkout. This box must be checked for the credit to be applied to your purchase.

Store credits expire 6 months (180 days) from the date issued.

Do gift cards or store credits expire?

Store credits expire six months from the date they were issued.

Gift cards do not expire.

++PAYMENTS AND ORDERS

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept major credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discovery, PayPal, Shop Pay, and Affirm to those that qualify.

We do not accept checks or money orders.

Can I add on to an order, or combine two orders, to save on shipping?

Unfortunately, no. Once an order is placed, it is final, and we cannot alter it.

One of the scents I ordered is backordered. What does that mean to me?

It means we are holding your order until that scent is back in stock. Regrettably, we cannot ship orders until they are complete.

++SHIPPING

What are your shipping rates?

As of April 2026, orders within the United States under $175 ship for a flat rate of $10.95.

Domestic orders of $175 or more receive free shipping! 

All domestic orders are shipped via USPS Priority Mail. Rates are subject to change without notice.

Transit times typically range from 3-5 business days from the time USPS takes possession of your package for domestic orders. 

International shipping rates are automatically calculated at checkout for available countries. International orders of $300 USD or more receive free shipping!

Do you accept international orders?

Yes! International shipping rates will be automatically applied on orders to available countries. If your country is not available for shipping, you will receive a “shipping not available” error message. If you need assistance, please contact us at answers [at] blackphoenixalchemylab [dot] com.

All of our international shipments are sent via USPS Priority International, with international orders over $300 USD ship for free!

Please note that customers are responsible for any applicable import duties, taxes, or customs fees required by their country. Transit times for international orders vary widely and can be unpredictable. We have no control of the packages once they leave the Lab.

How long will my order take to ship?

All orders, including domestic orders, may take in excess of 14-21 business days to process, pack and ship out due to a heavy workload, the process of hand-blending and the nature of our product. 

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate rush order requests.

Can I track my shipment?

Yes! You will receive a tracking notice once your order has shipped with your USPS tracking number. You can track your order via the USPS website, or by using the Shop app.

Please note that the USPS system may experience delays in scanning labels. This does not indicate a problem with the shipment, and it is generally safe to assume it will be delivered normally.

I just tracked my package on USPS.com and it shows that it has already been delivered but I haven’t received anything. Help!

Please contact your local USPS office for assistance. For best results, we recommend visiting in person whenever possible. If you can’t physically get to the post office, try asking your regular letter carrier about the package. If you can’t go to the post office, and you can’t ask your mailman, try calling the location that serves your area. We do not recommend emailing the USPS.

++RETURNS

What is your return policy?

All sales are final. 

Due to the artisanal, personal-care nature of our products, we cannot accept returns or exchanges.

Exceptions for Damaged Items: While we cannot accept returns, we stand by our quality. If your order arrives damaged or is incorrect due to a packing error, please contact us within 3 days of delivery at answers [at] blackphoenixalchemylab [dot] com with a photo of the damaged item. We will be happy to send a replacement for the affected items.

What sizes are available?

Our full size products are offered in 5ml Perfume Oils in an amber apothecary vial , 1oz Beard Oils with a dropper, 4oz spray Hair Glosses, 4oz pump Hand & Body Lotion, 4oz spray top Atmosphere Spray, and 15ml Nail Polish. Our sample sizes on available products are offered as 1/32oz perfume oil vial and 2ml atomizer hair gloss or atmosphere spray. 

Are your products vegan? Do you test on animals?

With the exception of our honey-based products and CO2 Butter Extract, everything that comes from BPAL is vegan, and we abhor animal testing. Black Phoenix does not test on animals, and we do not work with companies that utilize animal testing. Black Phoenix is entirely cruelty-free, as our many dogs and (hairless) cat will attest. All products are tested on staff, family, and friends. Always double check the ingredients or contact our customer service at answers [at] blackphoenixalchemylab [dot] com before making a purchase if you are unsure of any components listed on a product.

Do you offer samples? 

Indeed we do! 

Many of the perfume oils, hair glosses, and atmosphere sprays found in our Eternal Collection are available in sample sizes. Our perfume oils are offered as samples in 1/32oz “Imp’s Ears” vials, and hair glosses and atmosphere spray samples are available in 2ml “Goblin Squirt” atomizers. 

We also offer a number of perfume oil discovery sets, lovingly called “Imp Packs”. You may find them by clicking here

 If a sample size is available, you will see an option on the product listing. Sample sizes are not offered on our Limited Edition, Activism, Collaborations, Lunacy, or Carnaval Diabolique collections. 

No imps or goblins were harmed in the creation of any of our products. 

Imp’s Ear is trademarked BPAL’ese slang.

Can I request a free Imp’s Ear Sample?

Free imps (frimps!) are added to all Lab orders, but are selected at random.

Why are there sometimes batch variations?

Our products are, to a one, handmade and are crafted with meticulous care in batches of roughly 60-75 bottles at a time. Since we do not employ machinery to create or blend our oils, there may be some minor changes from batch to batch. Seasonal variations, soil quality, and weather conditions also affect the aroma profile or color of natural components, which may in turn cause slight changes in the tone and depth of the perfume.

The oil I bought smells different on me than it does on Cindy Lou. Why?

Body chemistry, skin pH, diet, age, natural body odor – all these variables (and more) affect the body’s affinity for a scent blend.

How long will this stuff last? Will it ever go bad?

Our oil blends will last for over one year, if they are cared for correctly. Black Phoenix products that have not been exposed to sunlight, skin oils, heat, or contaminants can last for many years. Please keep all of our products in a cool, dark place to maximize their shelf life.

What is the difference between a perfume and a perfume oil?

The following is a rough guide to the differences between the strength categories of scents:

  • Eau fraiche: 3% or less perfume oil.
  • Eau de cologne: 2 – 5% perfume oil.
  • Eau de toilette: 4 – 10% perfume oil.
  • Eau de parfum: 8 – 15% perfume oil.
  • Perfume: 15 – 25% perfume oil.
  • Perfume oil: 15 – 80% perfume oil.

Do you sell anything other than perfume?

We sure do!

Our catalogue includes scented hair gloss, atmosphere sprays, beard oils, bath oils, hand & body lotion, and massage oils, and we are adding new blends and products all of the time. Our unscented items (but we love them just the same) include nail polish, t-shirts, socks, stickers, statues, mugs  and other oddments that will pique your interest and tickle your fancy. 

All of our items are unique to the Black Phoenix family, and are hand-crafted in-house or by fellow artisans and craftspeople.

Many of our products are seasonal or limited edition blends, but we frequently tidy up our catacombs and find treasures from the past.

Please tell me a little about Black Phoenix...

Our scents are unique to Black Phoenix, are all created in-house by Elizabeth Barrial or Brian Constantine, and every single one is hand-blended. We have over twenty years of experience in the field, and specialize in integrating mythology, archetypes, folklore, poetry, and visual artwork with scent.

We are extremely careful with the components that we use, as safety is paramount. Essential oils are highly concentrated. Many essential oils are extremely safe and have phenomenal therapeutic properties, but on the flip side, many essential oils can be harmful, either because they are skin irritants or because they may cause serious reactions in sensitive individuals. Some contain thujone, some are nervous system toxins, some are abortifacients. Nutmeg contains myristicin, myrrh in high doses can be cytotoxic, oakmoss absolute is potentially carcinogenic. Just because something is natural doesn’t always mean that it is good for you, so we exercise extreme caution when formulating our blends. We stay as natural as safely possible in all of our lines, both at Alchemy Lab and TAL – safely being the key word. There are many natural components used in traditional perfumery that are simply unethical to utilize: civet, castoreum, ambergris, and hyraceum are examples. Our ‘civet’ and ‘ambergris’ are bouquets, and thus, are composite scents created from plant-derived perfume oils combined to best approximate the scent. The popularity of some plants in perfumery has caused their decimation, and have driven some plants, like sandalwood, to near-extinction. We never, under any circumstances, utilize any plant material from an endangered species. In accordance with our vision for Black Phoenix, we almost exclusively work with small growers, distillers, manufacturers, crafters, and extractors, and whenever possible, we work with organic and self-sustaining farms.

We do everything in our power to ensure that our products please our customers while maintaining a high standard of quality and safety. To that end, we employ components that contain essential oils, CO2s, aroma compounds, pomades, concretes, absolutes, solvent extractions, accords, and bouquets in our fragrances. We do not use any nitro musks, polycyclic musks, or any other synthetic material that can be considered potentially harmful. With the exception of the mineral oil in some products, we do not use anything that is petroleum based. Our products are as natural as possible without compromising the safety and health of our customers. We will not use any component, natural or synthetic, that is deemed harmful to either the environment or the individual.

We believe in compassionate consumerism, and in giving as much back to the community as we can through charitable contributions, volunteer work, and by supporting fair trade and self-sustaining growers whenever possible. To cut down on waste and keep costs as low as possible for our clients, we use minimal packaging and do not include paper invoices in our shipments.

We have participated in the Green Power for a Green LA program at work and in our homes, and have participated in fundraisers for many fine organizations, including the Hero Initiative, the Orangutan Foundation UK, AIDS Project Los Angeles, Covenant House, the Red Cross, UNICEF, the SPCA, and the Humane Society.

We do everything in our power to keep costs as low as possible, stay connected with our clients, support other small businesses, and provide our employees with fair wages and benefits while maintaining our extremely high standards of quality and service. Our goal is to share the things that we love through the products we create while participating in imaginative, innovative, conscience-driven capitalism.
