Once upon a time in the 1900s, we hid a multitude of sins from our parents and other authority figures via a literal smokescreen of nag champa incense, conveniently available for purchase at the very establishments where we also bought our high-getting paraphernalia. 

The fact that this particular blend of aromatic ingredients from India also enjoyed associations with New Age spirituality and other harmless, hippy-dippy counterculture pastimes hopefully worked in our favor... but likely no one was fooled.
